Kathmandu, Nepal - Calcutta, India - Bangkok, Thailand

We woke up and were ready to go shortly after sunrise. We had a slight change of plans for the next couple of days. Today has us flying down to Calcutta for a quick gas 'n' dash, onto Bangkok, Thailand for the night. From there, it will be on to Kuala Lampur, Malaysia, home of the world's tallest building, the Petronas Towers.

The weather was pretty good as we climbed into the Caravan at Tribhuvan. The only problem with flying a small plane out of here is that there are hills on both ends of the runway. The whole airport seems to sit down in a little bowl of a valley. The enroute weather looks good, although there does seem to be a bit of a storm moving towards Calcutta. We should be able to beat it in, though.

We are cleared for a departure to the south, but we need to fly north to take it. It takes a few minutes to get high enough to clear the surrounding mountains, but once we do, it's a relatively short flight down to Calcutta.

Two hours later, and we can see the storm has just about reached Calcutta. We are landing at Behala (VEBA), a small strip in the suburbs. That the storm is just about on us doesn't make me happy. I don't want to have to be delayed here any longer than necessary. It's not that I don't like Calcutta, I just really want to get to Bangkok this evening.

The wind slams us around pretty hard as we approach, but the landing goes without incident. Luckily, the airport isn't really busy right now, and we are able to refuel quickly. Unluckily, it has really started to rain, and we are stuck here for a couple hours.

Finally, the weather breaks enough that we can get on our way. The flight to Bangkok is 831NM from here, and should take around 5 hours. That should get us down just before sunset.

We were able to climb above the weather fairly quickly, and aimed ourselves southeast for the flight to Bangkok (VTBK). There really wasn't much to see below us because of the clouds, but once they broke, we were treated to an endless expanse of Indian Ocean. About halfway through the flight, we could see the mountains of Burma rising up on our left. We crossed over Burma and soon found ourselves over the jungles of Thailand. The flight seemed much longer than the 5 hours it took. The sun was setting to our right as we were cleared to land. We tied down for the night just as it got dark.

I'll have some pictures from Bangkok up later in the flight. Tonight, we are going to go enjoy the nightlife, and then get some sleep for the trip to Kuala Lampur, Malaysia tomorrow.
