Day 11
Saturday, 3 November, 2001
There really isn't much to report on this part of the trip, which would take 2 legs. Leg 1 took us from Dubai to Rajkot, India, where we'd do a quick refuel, and then head to New Delhi on Leg 2.
There were some concerns, however. The first leg would take us over the Indian Ocean, but perilously near Iranian airspace. Not wanting to take a chance on doing anything to upset the Iranians, we adjusted the course south. The other concern was the American naval presence in the Indian Ocean, which had fighters and other planes heading towards Afghanistan in the same area we would be crossing. Our State Department friend had us keep the transponder from before, and also the radio, so that we could stay clear of any interaction.
The flight was scheduled for 13,000 feet on a wonderfully clear day. It went without incident. We were never contacted by Iranian controllers, and were never told to get out of the way by the Navy. We made it to Rajkot in a little over 5 hours.
It was about an hour delay to refuel and get some lunch, and then right back into the air.
The second leg took us to a small airport outside New Delhi, where we landed 3 hours later. It was an uneventful flight. We'll be on the ground in New Delhi for a day or so, then it will be off to the top of the world... Kathmandu and Mt. Everest, before heading down to Calcutta, and then through Southeast Asia.
