Day 7
Tuesday, 30 October, 2001
We make a leisurely 500ft/min climb to 16,000 feet, watching the ground fall away beneath us for a little while, then race back up as we get into the mountains. For as beautiful as it is, there really isn't much to see. My brother is keeping a lookout for low flying mountain goats. We stay high for a while as we cross into Italy. Soon, we see the ground falling away again, and the sun starts reflecting off the Adriatic Sea. We descend down to 7,000 to get a better view of the ground, but we are just too far away from Venice to really see anything. There isn't much to see between Venice and Rome. There are a lot of vineyards and farms, and a couple of small towns. Soon, though, we can make out the Mediterranean off to our right, and Rome is closing in on us. We are cleared to fly directly in on runway 15 at Ciampino (LIRA), which features an ILS approach. There is no other traffic in front of us. As we turn towards the southwest to line up with the runway, we fly almost directly over Rome.
The landing is smooth, and we taxi over to parking. We stuff a backpack with some water and snacks, and set off to find the best way to get to Rome from here. We should have some good pictures to put up here when we get back this evening.
