Day 6
Monday, 29 October, 2001
We won't get much time to spend in Munich, unfortunately. We want to spend a decent amount of time in Rome tomorrow, so we need to leave early. We landed at Oberpfaffenhofen, southwest of the city, and caught the train into town.
We missed Oktoberfest by a couple of weeks, but that didn't mean there was no beer to be found. This too is a beautiful city, and it would be nice to have a few days to spend here, but we are barely into our round the world trip, and I can't leave the cats back home alone for too long.
I've adjusted tomorrow's course, too. We had been planning on flying west to cross the Alps in Switzerland, but in the interest of time, we're going to fly directly south over Austria instead. Take off is scheduled for 7:15am local time, just during sunrise. The weather looks good, too. It's about 382NM to Ciampino (LIRA), southwest of Rome. We'll be going VFR the whole way. After takeoff, we will turn south and climb to 16,000 feet, high enough to clear the Alps. I don't want to crash there like last time. The route will also take us near Venice, but not close enough for pictures, and over Rome.
It's midnight now... time to get a lot of rest for tomorrow's big day.
