..TROOPER'S SONG
Earth's Last Hope
On a planet that had trained itself to respond to a nuclear war in minutes, it took two days to realize that the Raccoons from Mars were not friendly visitors. Caught with its pants down, the Earth needed heroes.
It was seven o'clock in the morning. Major Carmen, the first of the True Dogs, was gazing out his kitchen window at his Fish and Duck pond*. He was on the phone with the President.
"Raccoons, sir?" Carmen rubbed his eyes and took a deep breath. This was too close to last night's dream. "They wouldn't be from Mars would they?" He turned his gaze to the kitchen table. Where had he left his twinker? His trigger finger itched.
"Drat. Mars. Yes, Major, once again your instincts prove true," answered the President. "Things are coming apart. You're our last hope."
Swell, thought Carmen.
*There were no ducks in Carmen's pond, but there were several varieties of flying fish; hence the 'fish and duck' was meant as a friendly warning.
