Service notes
Most libraries have only one person on staff who is commissioned; service hours are limited. Call before you visit. Most notaries prefer the advance call because it gives them the opportunity to tell you what is needed for identification and who needs to be present during the notarization. If the document requires witnesses, please bring them. Library staffers are not required to witness documents.

How to become a Notary Public
In the State of New Jersey Notaries Public are commissioned by the Department of the Treasury, Division of Revenue. Notaries must be:

• A resident of New Jersey or of an adjoining state who maintains, or is regularly employed in, an office in this State.
• 18 years or older.
• Not convicted of a crime under the laws of any state of the United States for an offense involving dishonesty or a crime of the first or second degree.

The application for Notary appointment may be downloaded from the Web. The length of commission is five years.
