query: Need info on Priscilla McMillan (not sure of spelling) A journalist in the 50's & 60's who wrote for the NY Times and Washington Post. Looking for articles etc.written by her. Thank you.
This went through several cycles. Final resolution was providing McMillan's current address and phone number. BGMI showed her to have worked as Moscow correspondent for a now defunct news syndicate in 1950-60s, so explained to patron difficulty of identifying which of news service articles were hers. McMillan went on to join Harvard faculty in Soviet studies and while no longer at university, lives in that area. Patron (local) was grandfather helping grandson do a school assignment and deadline loomed large.

query: First, I wanted to thank your staff for answering my last question about dinosaurs so quickly. I was very impressed with your service. So naturally, when I had another question, I thought of you folks.
For my graduate course, we have been given 2 trivia definitions and I need to find the word that matches the definition. I have tried the on-lin encyclopedias and the dictionary without any success.
1. the phobia name that means: fear of peanut butter sticking to the roof of your mouth.
2. term applied to: phenomena when the sun rays break through the clouds and you see the ray like pattern under the cloud. For this one I did find 'sunburst' in the dictionary, but do you if there is a more scientific term that applies to this phenomena? Thanks again for all your assistance.
Answered peanut butter immediately, from book of phobias and superstitions. Advised would have to pursue sun rays. E-mailed query on that to local high school teacher who is AMS (American Meteorological Society) certified educator. He provided explanation and URL for graphic of the phenomenon.

Thanks for all your help. I finally got a handle on Delacroix's "The Bride of Abydos".. It depicts a heroic/romantic scene from the novel of the same name. Delacroix was inspired when he read the novel in 1824. He even recommended it to Byron "to re-read in order to inspire himself". This info and the color plate is from Pheobe Pool's DELACROIX:THE COLOUR LIBRARY OF ART [ Pub- Paul Hamlyn - London } and was faxed to me on [3/27/98] by Pat at Camden County Public Library's Reference Desk . source: I've been searching all around this area for clues of my grandfather.
query: My grandfather died while living in X but there are no death records either in the Township or Borough. The clerk said that if he had gone to a neighboring hospital the records would be elsewhere. Can you give me the address of the County Vital Records Office or otherwise direct me. I do not want to try the state office because they have tried twice to locate the records and have failed although at that time I had the date of death but not the county. I'll appreciate any advise you can give me. By the way would you mind looking up an obit for him? Like I said he was living in X and he died Feb. 19xx. His name was Xxxx Xxxxx. He had family in Morristown so an obit may have a appeared there as well. Thanks so much,

From: @concentric.net" 28-MAR-1998 23:10:56.70
I don't know how odd this is but I know he doesn't show up on the death index but when I corresponded with the Social Security Adm. they gave me his social security number and death date listed as Feb. 19xx. Said that was all the info I could get without a death certificate. I tried contacting them again to find out the zip where his last benifit check was sent but they did not respond.
I feel like I have his location pinned down to your general area so I may just have to check out local cemeteries and funeral homes etc. until I get lucky. Please do check with the library for me if it's not too much trouble. Morristown and ZZZZ is where I found a [relative] and [relative] who is XX. Can you believe the later is he is living in the same house that his parents owned and that he was born in!
If you are a reference libraian can you help me figure out what my relationship is to these two people? [Personal details edited.] Thanks for your help!

query: I would like any information you may have on the Shedd co of Rosell NJ in the early part of the century. also any info on Diehl of Elizabethport and later Finderne would be appreciated. when did shedd start and end and what did they make/ why did they cease operation
> Date: Tuesday, April 14, 1998 7:51 AM
> We find Diehl in Elizabeth in 1902 directory, again in 1915, when they > were third largest employer (387 employees) ..manufacturer of motors and > fans. So far that is all we have found. Nothing on Shedd (there is a > Minnesota food company of that name in the early part of the century) > or on Finderne. How did you hear about these? Old stock certificates?
Hi again, What an interesting updatte I have for you. I check with the AFCA on the web, they told me that the 2800 Shedd fan that was sold on a web auction never existed and was a hoax pulled by a person who is not a member. In addition there was a Shedd Electric in Ampere NJ for a short while, but they started to buy Westinghouse fans and put their own Shedd label on them...Anh info on a Shedd electric company in Ampere or New Empere New Jerszey? Also, do you folks in New Jersey, maybe refer to Finderne as a suburb of Elizabeth? that might explain the reference to Diehl offinderne in 1951. The Diehl fan I had was made in 1915 so your info was great, I sold it a few months ago and later learned that my farm was built by the former lt gov. of Xxx and this got me to thinking that it may have been his. Do you have any info on Eck? The AFCA guy I talked to asked if I could find out abouty this fan manufacturer in early New Jersey. Sop here I am a non collector, non antiquer in the middle of some mysteries. But it's fun and Im sure you enljoy them too or you woudnt be a librarian. Any other Dieh, shedd or Eck info would be appreciated. Thanks again in advance .

TThank you so much for your help. I didn't think finderne was a suburb. Ampere is a town that was around in the early part of the century.I e mailed the president of the AFCA and he told the Crocker Wheeler co was in a now non exsistant town called Ampere. I imagine someone in their group has a fan with that name on their tag.Just think I found an old fan in my basement and the things a guy can learn. Even a line in a newspaper that can date when shedd,or eck were around would help. Diehl was still in Elizabeth in the 40's but by 1951 they were in Finderne, so i'm curious when or why they moved. I'm posting my name and address too, so you know I';m not some nut. If a letter to your local paper singing the praises of your library would help, let me know. Thank you again
"Towns" identified as postal sections of extant towns, one in central-south part of state. Two companies subsequently absorbed by GE ..full details of dates, mergers, etc. from state industrial directories e-mailed to patron

You were probably in one of two places...
Official county site..http://www.co.morris.nj.us OR
County Heritage Commission http://www.makcom.com/heritage (I think it is..but I'll check this) ..Printing is sometimes a matter of first clicking on the portion of the page you want to print, then printing. Things are sometimes arranged in side-by-side frames which are not always evident.

query: What are the guidelines necessary to maintain and upkeep a water detention base on a landowner's property? Are there any tax incentives from the county?
ANSWERS .....Tue, 26 May 1998 20:29:47 -0400 ...Subject: Retention basin
First thing you would want to check would be land use ordinances of the municipality in question ..what town? We may have them here at the library, though latest! is usually found at town library or town engineers office. (Example: Randolph requires wire fence of certain height around basins, with gate entrance should emergency services ever have to get in.) Tax assessment is also a municipal level determination...the county board of assessors hears appeals of municipal assessments. Do you know or would you like us to check on the zoning for a lot with retention basin ?
From: @siemenscom.com" 27-MAY-1998 14:31:54.13
Thanks you for responding so quickly! The town is XXX. It appears that one can make an appeal if a detention base in on your property. Correct?
Date: Wed, 27 May 1998 17:32:14 -0400
The Board of Taxation has put out a good flyer (not online, unfortunately) on how to file an appeal...let me have your "snail-mail" address and I'll send a copy. Their phone number is 973-285-6707, the description below of their duties and powers. ------------------------------------ Board of Taxation-- Maintains all county records of taxable real estate. Supervises and directs all municipal tax assessors. Reviews assessments and orders reevaluations when necessary. Rules on appeals filed by taxpayers on assessments.

query: did Francis Scott Key write the Star Spangled Banner at Fort McHenry while taken prisoner on a ship? Or on a hill?
From: 28-MAY-1998 21:45:19.22 Morris County Library
The original Star Spangled Banner hangs in the Smithsonian Museum of American History..below are selections from their description of how the song was written. It agrees with the Encyclopedia Britannica account...Key had gone to Baltimore to seek release of a friend who was a British prisoner. Key himself was NOT a prisoner, but was detained on a truce ship, from which he saw the bombardment. If you go to www.si.edu and search on spangled, banner you can get the whole story and a picture of the flag--its enormous! (I saw it last June.) ..aren't dinner table disagreements fun?! http://www.si.edu [Also sent extensive selection of text from si.edu, with URL.]
