When are civil service tests given?
That depends upon the position you are applying for. The only test that is given on a regular
basis is the Clerical Assessment. Upcoming tests are announced on the NJ Dept. of Personnel's Web site. Scan the site
regularly for any jobs that interest you. Instructions for application and testing are provided on the
job listing.
Are tests required?
If you apply for a civil service job you may be required to take a standardized test. Some
jobs, however, are graded on education and experience.
Must I take a test before I am hired?
Depending upon the job and the situation, it is possible to be hired "provisionally." This
means when the test is called you will be expected to fill out the paperwork and (if it is called)
take the test.
Do civil service lists expire?
It depends upon the job. If you want to know if you are still on a list, call
(609) 292-4144.
How can I get study guides for the exams?
Neither the federal or NJ governments publish position-specific "official study guides" or
release
copies of old tests. The only exceptions? NJ law enforcement and firefighter jobs.
The State does publish this general Multiple Choice Exam Orientation Guide. There are several commercial publishers that sell
profession-specific study guides. The largest firms are Arco, Barrons,
and National Learning Corporation. No library in
this area owns a complete set of these study guides. Your librarian can help you identify the study
guide you need and borrow it for you.
Who can I call if I have questions regarding my certification/application?
