ABOUT OUR CLASSES

All classes are free, 90-minutes and taught by MCL staff.

Software classes are designed for people with little or no experience
using the programs. NOTE: we are teaching Word 2003.
Advanced classes are available locally.
Unless noted otherwise, registration is limited to 20 (one person per
computer).
Classes are announced the first of each month for the following
month (April 1st=May classes).

Alternative Health: Overview of online sources for learning about alternative health treatments. Special emphasis on evaluating medical Web sites.
Ancestry.com: Learn the features of this popular genealogy database. Special emphasis on Census records.
Back to School: Online subscription databases & reference help, K-College
Digital photography: Overview of camera features and settings and discussion of photo editing and storage. This is an intro level class. Bring your camera and cable(s) if you'd like to burn a CD of your pictures.
E-Bay basics: An overview of buying and selling on Ebay.
E-Mail Basics 1: Hands-on workshop helps you establish a free GMail account. Limited to 10 people.
E-Mail Basics 2: For people who have taken E-Mail Basics 1 or already have e-mail accounts. Learn how to send/receive attachments, create folders, and set up an address book. We recommend you take this class a month after the Basics 1 class. Limited to 14 people.
Easy, breezy posters: creating flyers and signs with Word: Learn how to make posters with borders and pictures. Requires basic familiarity with Word.
Excel 1: Learn how to create simple spreadsheets with MicroSoft Excel.
Excel 2: Spreadsheet & graphs. Requires Excel 1 or experience.
Genealogy: Genealogy: we'll talk about three genealogy databases (Ancestry, HeritageQuest and Jewish Data) and you'll have time to do some of your family research.
Google tips: Take an in-depth look at the newest features of Google, one of the most popular search engines on the Web.
Going Green: Going Green - it’s helping to save the planet!!! Learn about some of the most popular online Eco-Friendly goods and services websites for consumers. Includes tips on finding environmentally safe products and covers some of the prominent organizations involved in the Green movement.
Health on the 'Net: Focuses on which health sites are reliable, how to find information on medicines, physicians and medical conditions, and how to find journal articles. Library services will also be covered. See also: Alternative health.
Internet job search tips: Identify the best job search web sites, search strategies & online job applications
Internet challenge!: Want to practice what you learned in our Google & Internet searching classes? Join us for two fun question and answer quizzes. The first quiz focuses on using Google's unique tools. The second quiz concentrates on search engines, search strategy, keywords, and site evaluation. Excellent opportunity to ask questions!
Introduction to the Internet: Basic introduction to setting up and using a web browser and searching the Internet.
Library Catalog & My Account: Tips for searching books, videos & other items in our catalog. Also: placing reserves, renewing books, and checking your account.
Magazines & newspapers: Did you know you can access hundreds of magazines and newspaper articles from your home computer for free? All it takes is a library card. We'll show you how!
Mail Merge (Word): How to create an address book and send form letters. Recommended for small business owners, local organizaions, & fundraisers. Knowledge of Word required.
PC Basics 1 (Please take these classes in order): Learning computer terms, understanding the parts of the computer, the difference between hardware & software, and browser basics.
PC Basics 2: Using the "Start" button, working with Windows, creating icons & folders.
PC basics 3: Easy things to do using the Start menu: desktop background, screen savers, setting your Home Page, & creating Bookmarks/Favorites.
People, places & things: finding it fast on the Internet: Online phone books, company contacts, magazine articles, and quick facts. What are you looking for? Bring your examples and we'll look at them.
PowerPoint 1: Lean how to create a basic presentation and use simple tools. REQUIRES: familiarity with PC basics and Word.
PowerPoint 2: Adding pictures, clip art and hyperlinks to your presentations.
Publisher intro: Learn how to create a basic trifold brochure with MicroSoft Publisher software. Requires familiarity with PC basics and Word.
Reference USA: Use this database to find company information and create custom lists. Excellent tool for job seekers, entrepreneurs, market researchers, and non-profit fundraisers.
Top 10 sites for Food: Best sites for recipes, vintage products, nutrition info, food safety & more!
Top 10 Web sites (everyone needs to know!): Take a tour of the top web sites for finding information we all need every day. Sites are selected by our Reference staff.
Twitter 1: Hottest social media blasting news in 140 characters or less. Who uses Twitter & why? (demo only)
Twitter 2: I'm on Twitter, now what? Set your profile & graphics, maximize your tweets, select who to follow & check out who's following you. (hands on if you have a Twitter account)
Typing & mouse practice: Self-paced open lab for people who want to practice. We provide tutorials & assistance.
Welcome to the library!: Join us for a walking tour of the building and an introduction to all of the services we have to offer you - In the first part you'll learn about all of our departments; the second half includes a short overview of the online catalog and a recap of what we do - to be held in the training room.
Word 1 (Please take these classes in order): Learn how to type a simple letter in Word. We will cover beginning your document, adjusting fonts (typefaces, size, bolding), margins, printing, and saving.
Word 2: Spell check, cut & paste, find & replace, font options, color, columns, & borders. Use this practice document for this class.
Word 3: Lists (numbered, bullets), clip art, and copy/paste text and pictures from the Internet.
Word 4: Review and refresh everything we've learned in Word 1-3 PLUS e-mailing your documents as attachments.
Your library @home: Learn how to access our databases, e-mail reference services, and find out what's going on in the library from your home computer.
