Schaukeln Sie Mich, OH Matthaus!

Thus Spake MetroSufferer!
Mission: "Charlie, Pick Kirovski!"

Hi, folks. Long time, no see. Welcome to a special edition of the MetroSufferers Newsletter. This is our special pre-2/6/00 MLS SuperDraft edition. I've kept the audience small; just the main men at the MLS, the Senior Vice Chairmen of the MetroSufferers and Signore Mejido himself.

Today's Topic:

The Importance of Selecting Jovan Kirovski with our Number One Pick

We at MetroSufferers, along with every other Metrofan out there (there may still a few left after the fiasco that was last season), have endured almost every conceivable indignity since we began rooting for this team in 1996. Before they even took the field, the players were saddled with the unfortunate name of MetroStars, which certainly doesn't create a vision of greatness in the eyes of the fan (What exactly is a MetroStar anyway? Didn't Buck Rodgers fly around in one?). That was followed by the Nicola Caricola OWN GOAL defeat in our first-ever home opener, six coaches in five years, two last place finishes and a host of broken promises regarding foreign acquistions and just about every other topic imagineable. We have seen the team draft and trade for horrible domestic talent (Kerry Zavagnin, Damian Silvera, & Edmundo Rodriquez just to name a few), and deliver us such truly horrendous foreigners as Marcelo ("I never say no to Chocolate cake) Vega, Ruben Dario (Homesick) Hernandez, Joao Luiz/Guido (one person in my eyes) and the world-renound homicidal maniac known as Branco. The list goes on and on. While we appreciate that all the teams in MLS have to work with a budget, we also realize that the same rules that apply to other teams apply to us and that le Metro (I was in France last month) has done a worse job of working within the system than any other team in MLS by far. We also appreciate the fact that Commissioner Garber is working very hard to improve the league's image and improve the overall quality of play, for which we applaud his efforts. We even appreciate that Charlie Still-in-Charge-O (who we have abused many times in the past in our newsletter) was willing to sack/let go of/kiss and say godbye to Bora and install OZ, an offensive-minded individual, as the head coach. These are all steps in the right direction. However, only one move can put the league on the course of respectibility, show the sports world both here aned abroad that MLS is serious, improve the Metros on the field and begin the most important era in MLS' brief history.

DRAFT JOVAN KIROVSKI WITH THE NUMBER ONE PICK, CHARLIE. DON'T SCREW THIS UP!

This is Charlie's moment. It appears that Kirovski may very well enter the Super Draft (or as Lothar would say, "Uberdraft") because he is sitting on the bench in Germany and US National team coach Bruce Arena has let it be known that he is more inclined to pick players who are playing regularly for National team spots, whether or not they are touching the ball in the MLS or overseas. In the case of a player like Claudio Reyna, he is starring at Rangers in Scotland and being paid very well to do so. There's no incentive for him to come home to he States, New Jersey boy or not. In the case of Jovan Kirovsi ("JK"), if MLS can make up the money (a big IF admitedly), there's no reason not to come to MLS. He's sitting on the bench in Germany and risking his National Team status while doing so. He is a very talented attacking midfielder who has been in Europe since the age of 16 (he will be 24 by opening day 2000) and is leaps and bounds superior to most of the American players in MLS. He would be a huge asset to any team that gets him, even the lowly Metros. If the MLS cannot keep the best American talent in the states even when those individuals are not playing regularly in Europe, then the MLS should just pack it in now. Kirovski's arrival would give the Metros a real, honest to God Attacking Midfileder, something that Tab ("Don't bother me, I've got a hangnail") Ramos was suppposed to be, but never was for us. If Tab is the cancer on this team, then JK is the cure.

In a pefect world, MLS would allocate JK to the Metros, thus allowing us to draft a college star like Nick Garcia or Sasha Vitore or Akelsey Korol with our number one pick. Hence, two players for the price of one. However it seems that Commissioner Garber is getting away frorm allocations and rightly so. (Past allocations were not based on need but ethnic marketing or so it seemed. "Hey", Doug Logan must have thought, "NY has a huge Colombian population, so lets allocate Ruebn Hernandez to the Metros. So what if he's horible?") While this two-for-one scenario would greatly benefit le Metro, I would understand if it didn't for the aforemntioned reasons.

The NASL failed not because it had too many foreigners but because it didn't have enough Americans. There IS a difference. Sixteen years later, the American talent is out there. Bring it home. Put the best available American player on the MLS team in the largest market and be there to watch Kirovski become a star in his own country. Based on last year's woeful Metro attack, he fits our needs as a player and will do wonders for the League's credibility. Kirovski's arrival at the Meadowlands allows the team to move some of the other excess midfielders (READ: CHUNG & SORBER, etc) for a forward (READ: ONE OF THE FOUR IN MIAMI!) Then, maybe, just maybe, we who spend our cash on tickets won't be embarassed by the team at Exit 16W because they'll be playing attractive, attacking, maybe even occasionally WINNING football. Don't mess this one up, Charlie. Don't let him, Don.

All comments will be appreciated. Thank you. Gracias. Grazie. Forza Metros! Viva le Metro!

Dear William and Michael,

I appreciate your note-- I think it is well reasoned and has some great points. I hope the MetroStars have the chance to draft a player of Jovan's ability. For the record we have been interested in Jovan for the past two years.

Thanks,

Charlie Stillitano
