The Clavinet produces sound by the mechanical action of hammer tips striking down onto a set of strings when the keys are depressed. The hammers were made of an orange substance known as "Urepan", a European rubber compound made by Bayer in the 1970's. Unfortunately, time, heat and moisture caused these tips to deteriorate, making them soft and mushy. Even in the most well-cared for Clavinets, the deterioration of the hammer tips caused the strings to notch a "groove" into them, causing the keys to stick and make an unpleasant "popping sound". Many years ago, in an interview for N.Y. Musician magazine, I was asked on what people should look out for when purchasing a clavinet. I immediately responded "Cracked Pickups!". Original Clavinet Pickups are housed in plastic and sealed in an epoxy, this makes them A. Easily breakable and B. Impossible to repair. Being that original replacements no longer exist, many clavinets with cracked pickups were sadly discarded or used for parts. We simply could not tolerate that, so we commissioned a top U.S. pickup maker to manufacture new clavinet pickups - with a twist. One of the biggest complaints of Clavinet owners is the NOISE and HUM the instrument picks up, because it uses SINGLE COIL pickups and is mostly unshielded.
