On October 27, 2000 Barbara and Jeff Broido filled two cars with John Zacherle life masks, t-shirts, computers, paintings, display fixtures and whatnot and traveled to East Rutherford, NJ for the tenth annual Chiller Theatre convention. This is a Halloween show devoted to the horror genre which attracts thousands of fans each year. The entire Meadowlands Sheraton is filled to overflowing as are the surrounding hotels. This year, we'd estimate that there were at least 15,000 attendees. Some of the celebrity guests were John Zacherle ("Zacherley," The Cool Ghoul), James Doohan ("Star Trek's" Scottie), Billy Dee Williams ("Empire Strikes Back"), Carel Struycken (Mr. Homn of "Star Trek, The Next Generation" and Lurch in "The Addams Family"), Geoffrey Holder ("Live and Let Die", 7-Up commercials [remember the un-cola nuts?]), Ethan Philips (Neelix of "Star Trek Voyager"), Forrest J. Ackerman, noted horror and sci-fi editor, Mark Goddard ("Lost in Space"), Sara Karloff (Boris' daughter), Linda Lovelace, Patricia Neal ("The Day the Earth Stood Still," "Face in the Crowd," "Ghost Story"), Robert Duncan McNeill (Tom Paris of "Star Trek Voyager"), Lee Merriweather ("The Time Tunnel", "Batman") and many, many others.
We arrived home exhausted, but will remember this event fondly. We had a great time with Zacherley and found a new friend in Carel Struycken. He's been acting for years, but his current occupation is developing virtual reality hardware and software.
