On hot days New Jersey is plagued with a particular type of air
pollution called ground level ozone. This seasonal pollution problem
starts in May and lasts through September.
The Department of Environmental Protection for the State of New
Jersey warns that ground level ozone is an acute health threat to well
over a million NJ residents suffering from respiratory illness and hundreds
of thousands of others who work or play outdoors.
It is important that those people most at risk have a reliable
means of knowing when high ozone levels are anticipated so they can take
steps to avoid exposure. The DEP has on-going programs to monitor
air quality and inform the media and interested parties. They can
predict what the air quality will be one day in advance in any given region
of New Jersey. You may access this information on the DEP web site
at www.state.nj.us/dep/airmon.
The DEP also operates a toll-free phone line, 1-800-782-0160 for daily
air quality forecasts.
